Sanrio World - A mobile app for a theme park

A specialized mobile app for a theme park snack shop that includes location and menu sections for new visitors at the park. Most theme parks only have apps for the whole park and not for a specific snack stand. The goal was to create an app that aligns with the company’s branding while maintaining accessibility and an easy checkout process for theme park goers.

Challenge

Waiting in lines for rides and for food is frustrating and annoying for park visitors. Users need an app that is easy to navigate and place an order while walking around the park. New visitors also feel overwhelmed to visit food stands when they don’t view the menu in advance nor do they know where it is located in the park. Features that would aid these pain points were crucial.

Results

The app follows the Sanrio image and allows users to order online and pick up at the stand. There is a menu feature that allows them to view items before they arrive to the park or while at the park. The map feature also lets users locate the snack stand and make it easier for them to pick up their orders.

Process

Research & Analysis: I conducted user interviews in order to better understand user needs and identify their pain points. I found that all users felt that the branding was very important for Sanrio fans and that creating a quick and easy checkout process was what they needed.

Competitive Analysis: I researched indirect and direct competitors in order to understand what was already on the market and what was missing. I found that all four that I looked into did not have an app for a snack stand.

Wireframing & Branding: I studied Sanrio and followed similar color schemes and typography in order to fit the brand and make it more enjoyable for loyal fans. As for wireframing, the main focus was the check out process and how to make it easy for users to navigate.

Usability Testing: I conducted a usability test with the users in the research stage. Some of them had difficulty reading the words because there was not a high enough contrast. This was later changed from pink to black. Also, some felt that the order of the buttons made it confusing to pick online ordering. The buttons were rearranged and improved this difficulty.

Prototyping: Preventing too much motion in the user flow was what we were taught in the Google UX Design program which I made to sure to pay attention to. I wanted to flow for the checkout process to be accessible for everyone and avoid too much movement for users as they will be walking around the park.

I started with few paper wireframes and created more as I went through translating them into digital wireframes. The rough layout was determined during this stage.

Conclusion

This was the first project assigned in the Google UX Design Certificate. I learned a lot on how to use Figma and how to implement the design thinking process. I also learned how important it is to be able to receive design critique and to make users the main focus of UX and UI design.

I created the Sanrio World logo with Canva and the menu items were created using AI & Adobe Photoshop. I added a carousel to the homepage to advertise special events or sales. The purpose of this design was for it represent Sanrio while also being timeless. It caters to fans while also being able to introduce its brand to new ones.
